Elliot lake race report (MMB): A big thank-you to Steve McKee who helped me reel back a critical attack by “Wheels of Bloor” who were attacking me all race-just as I would claw back one attack another would launch. As the GC man little help came from other riders. However, as the peleton was coming to the end of lap 1 I was at my limit with about 50m to bridge and just as I was about to explode McKee came flying down the descent and I grabbed his wheel to secure the catch. Ron Amos (“Ride w/ Rendall”, 2009 Prov HC champ) later attacked and Bruce Bird (WofB, sauble M1 winner) followed. I spent the next 20 km clawing them back as bird was 3rd on GC after stage 2. It came down to a dangerous sprint with high-speed jockeying and McKee showed the power he has by placing 4th against riders like Ian Scott (nat’l road champ) and K. Kurzawinski (former Olympian). Exhausted, I held on for 6th which gave me enough pts to grab GC win.
PS – Thx to HCC HC TTs as they gave me the training to take the Prov HC gold in record time 7:19. J. Prosser, who I have never met but whose Sydenham record I tied this year (3:23), got second in the elite 1/2 HC clocking an impressive 7:11 only 2 sec behind winner.
