March 2001 Newsletter

GOOD FRIDAY, APRIL 13th, 2001

The annual GOOD FRIDAY ROAD RACE, THE traditional season-opener for bicycle road racing in Ontario, is a "go" once again at the Hanlon Business Park course in Guelph. New this year will be traffic-control police officers on the course. This, along with other increased costs, has meant a necessity to increase entry fees. We had hoped to limit the entry fee to $20.00 (from $16.00 last year) but it appears this may not offset our increased costs. Our goals for the race remain the same as always:

for the Hamilton Cycling Club to "do our part" for bicycle racing by putting on a good

event for the racers.

maintain good public relations with the municipality, course residents etc.

to at least "break even" financially, and hopefully raise some money for our club.

Attaining this third goal depends directly on the number of racers that enter our race; hopefully the

increased entry fee will not have a negative impact in keeping racers away; I’m hoping that the lure of prize money this year will negate that thought.

We are so dependent on having good weather for our race; at this time of year "good" means above freezing temperatures and little or no rain. Anything better is bonus!

For us to achieve goals #1 and #2, we count on YOU, our Hamilton Cycling Club membership, to help out at our event. It really IS fun being a part of our crew that "makes it all happen". We need help in the "big tent" – at the registration tables and at our "snack bar" where we will be selling coffee and donuts. Anyone wanting to bring other snack items will be welcome to do so!

On the race course we will need some marshals to assist the police in traffic control. We require a number of people at the finish line to assist in getting a finishing order for each race.

If you are able to help out, even for part of the day, please give me (Rob) a call to let me know. Thanks!

WHAT ARE WE RACING FOR?

Pride? Glory? Pain? GO FOR THE TROPHIES!

As outlined in the CLUB CONSTITUTION, (if you don’t have a copy, phone me and I’ll send you one) we have awards for OVERALL CLUB CHAMPION, BEST-ALL-ROUNDER, and TIME TRIAL CHAMPION. There are also several "trophy events", where the winner is presented with a large "perpetual" trophy at our Awards Banquet and gets to keep it for a year. Our club trophies, the Nella, the Hogben, the Keyes and others, date back decades. Become a part of history by having YOUR name engraved on one of these trophies. (Of course, you’ll have to participate in our races for a chance to win.)

The OVERALL CLUB CHAMPION is the one who is the most successful at the most club race events (attendance is KEY!).

Our BEST ALL ROUNDER CHAMPIONSHIP series consists of five events: two road races, two time trials and a hill climb.

The TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP series for H.C.C. consists of three events, all time trials, of course (see calendar).

At the beginning and end of our club Racing Schedule, we have our two O.C.A. – sanctioned events, the GOOD FRIDAY ROAD RACE and the DUNDURN CASTLE CYCLOCROSS. These events are for racers holding a racing licence.

New this year, we will be allowing Oakville Cycling Club and Brampton Cycling Club members to compete in our club races, as part of our "interclub pact". Only H.C.C. members will be eligible for our club trophies.

To date there has been no ‘Interclub Race Series’ set, as there was last year. Results from last year’s series have yet to be determined.

C.T.T.A. EVENTS

The Combine Time Trial Association (C.T.T.A.), started by Leon Hawes of the Oakville Cycling Club in 1994, has been a source of competition for Brampton, Hamilton and Oakville Clubs since then. All of the events are individual time trials. In order to get a C.T.T.A. medal at year’s end, one must complete at least one 15k, 40k and 80k time trial from the events on the calendar.

To date, Hamilton Cycling Club members have taken the top three placings in the C.T.T.A. more often than those from Oakville or Brampton. Will this continue into the 21st century? . . . We can make it happen!

Schedule for CTTA for 2001

By Ted Jukes, Brampton Cycling Club

Yes ladies and gentlemen we did survive Y2K. Perhaps that was one of our problems in 2000. Well enough with the past, let’s look forward to the future. At a recent meeting of the Combine Time Trial Association we have come up with a schedule for 2001. New for 2001 there are now nine (9) events to choose from. No excuses not to complete all events this year. Also new for 2001 we will hold a draw at the completion of each event. All competitors will have their names put into a hat, box or whatever is handy and the timekeeper will draw one (1) name to win a prize for the night. All prizes to be provided by the host club of the evening. We are also working on something else and hopefully we can successfully announce this shortly. Ah yes what do we have to do this year. As you may recall during 2000 there was much discussion as to the sanity of completing an 80k time trial. After some discussion at the meeting the decision was to retain the same format as in the previous year. In order to qualify for awards from the Combine Time Trial Association you must complete the following events: Juniors and Cadets: 2 x 15k and 1 x 40k time trials. Juniors and Cadets may also, at their choice, complete an 80k time trial and also become eligible for the Best All Rounder Competition. All Senior and Veteran competitors must complete one each 15k, 40k and 80k time trial to qualify for the various awards. Keep in mind all Veteran age competitor times are handicapped .6 second per kilometer per year of age over 40 years.

Club member TONY MARRIOTT came 5th in the 2000 World Duathlon Championships at Calais, France last October. Marriott was competing in the 65 – 69 year age category. Tony also came first in the Ontario ‘Trisport’ Triathlon series in 2000. CONGRATULATIONS, TONY!!WORLD DUATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPSCalais, France, October 2000By Tony Marriott Qualification for the Canadian age groupers took place at the Kananaskis Ski area in Alberta in August. This was the standard 10k run, 40k bike and 5k run, with challenging running in the hilly ski area, wearing bear bells, supposedly to keep the bears away. The following day, hikers on the trails were attacked by bears! The bicycle course was an out and back 200M hill done twice. In the 65 – 69 age group, I came in second to Pierce Plato of Wheatley, Ontario. The star of the event was Simon Whitfield who won the Men’s Elite group. Ironically, drafting is allowed for the Elites but not for the age groupers. Having registered for the Canadian Team with Triathlon Canada, I made my own travel arrangements with my wife, Sheila. We were able to use Air Miles to London, U.K., but then had to carry our luggage including a bagged bicycle on the tube (London Underground) before getting the express ‘Eurostar’ (chunnel or channel tunnel) train to Calais. Only bagged or boxed bicycles were accepted and then only grudgingly. In Calais, we were able to meet the nearly hundred strong Canadian team, as well as multiple nationalities, dominated by the Americans and British. On the evening before the race, there was a mini ‘parade of nations’ with likely more participants than spectators. The South Africans and some Latin Americans put on amusing costumes. The day of the race was cool, cloudy and damp. While the 10k and 5k runs took place on totally flat downtown streets of Calais, the more inspiring bike course took us against a strong headwind, along the shore of the Channel (La Manche), up a challenging 140M hill, and back to Calais with hairpin bends, narrow country lanes and picturesque French villiages. I was rather slow on the bike and the last 5k run. Pierce Plato challenged again in the last 100m, beating me by three seconds with a total time of about 2.40. We two Canadians were 4th and 5th in our 65 – 69 age group of 20 competitors. Overall, there were eight Canadian medalists, including golds for Women: E. Caron (16 – 19), R. Hill (25 – 29) and Men: Kurt Galbhaar (75+). We enjoyed the international camaraderie, as well as visiting historic sites and the sobering war museum. Anyone for the Duathlon World Championships, Rimini, Italy, September 2001?)
