March 2000

Good Friday Race

Though we've yet to get final approval from the City of Guelph, arrangements have been made for our club to host the 2000 race on "our" Hanlon Park course. It's a well-known venue to racers, thanks to a decade of racing on this 3km loop. As usual, we count on a strong showing of club members to help out at the registration table, on the judging platform and in other areas. So please give Randy (519-442-2118) or Rob (905-878-3971) a call if you're able to be there on April 21st!

Early Season Rides

Check the Calendar  or below for early season rides. 1st up Sunday March 19th 10am at the Family Restaurant, Peters Corners

Yaremczuk sets course record

Article from The Brantford Expositor Jan 31 2000 -EXPOSITOR STAFF

Natasha Yaremczuk of Paris was the over-all female winner of a duathlon event held in Coral Springs Fla. on the weekend. The 19 year old who competed in the 15- to 1 9-age division. topped 200 female competitors in all divisions. Yaremczuk's time of one hour 10 minutes in the three-kilometre run, 20-km bike and five-km run was a course record by three minutes. This was the first of a five-race duathlon series.

The next race will be Feb.27.

(A great article on Natasha by Ed O'Leary was unfortunately too faint to OCR into the web version of the Newsletter)

HAMILTON CYCLING CLUB MEMBER PROFILE

BRIAN CHEWTER

Brian became interested in bicycle racing at 13 years old when he participated in his first CANUSA games. Tom Liptrot was a big help in getting him started. He remembers "track" races at Southmount or Sir John A. MacDonald High Schools in Hamilton on quarter-mile asphalt flat tracks.

During the 70’s, Brian raced more or less full time, sometimes having part time jobs during the winter. After winning the Ontario Road Race Championship in 1972, he was selected to participate in the ’72 Munich and ’76 Montreal Olympics as a member of the "Road" cycling team, and rode the Team Time Trial and Road Race at both these Olympics.

He also raced the Tour of Mexico, a fifteen day event, three times, and the Scottish Milk Race, a seven day event, twice. He recalls how mountainous the Mexican Tour was.

His keys to success as a racer were lots of hard riding and going to races. His "pro" career ended in 1979 when he saw a need to make a more serious living and move on to other things. He has made a couple of comebacks since, in between fathering four daughters.

A hobby of Brian’s is rebuilding old cars and motorcycles, an Italian Motoguzzi being a favourite.

Brian is looking forward to a successful racing season in 2000 and I look forward to him being part of our H.C.C. Team. He certainly brings some impressive credentials. Hopefully we can read about his "glory years" more "in-depth" in an upcoming newsletter.

Brian recently opened "Central Cycle & Sport" a new bike shop at 117 Cannon St E in Hamilton Ph (905) 522-8445

INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR HAMILTON CYCLING CLUB MEMBERS

Your club membership fee includes an insurance premium paid to the O.C.A. that provides you with liability insurance coverage while participating in club events. This was also in effect during 1999.

NOW A WORD ABOUT THE I.R.S.

We have the Combine Time Trial Association; now new for the year 2000 we have the Interclub Race Series (I.R.S.). Talk had taken place between the Oakville and Brampton clubs to put races together that seemed "higher level" than club races without having to go through O.C.A. sanctioning. They wanted to include our club in this so we got together February 21st and, after putting together the C.T.T.A. schedule, we hammered out a five-event I.R.S. As with the C.T.T.A., events will be age-handicapped so older riders will have a chance to win.

The Oakville and Brampton clubs have an age-handicapping system in place for their events, which will be road races. Our club is running two time trial events and will use the time trial handicapping as used in the C.T.T.A. For the two-person team time trial, each rider will have his own age handicap (If over 40 years old) as well as his partner’s (if over 40 years old).
