The Hamilton Cycling Club Youth Development Program

Introduction

The Hamilton Cycling club is thrilled to announce that we have reorganized our youth programs.  We are committed to growing our youth membership and want to meet the needs of cyclists of all ages in our community. We are committed to help our youth cyclists grow and develop their riding skills.  We will be offering more opportunities for training, racing and riding for our youth members and will have a coach to support that development.

Youth members must take out a fully paid membership in the Hamilton Cycling Club.  They should race in the HCC jersey.  They must hold a valid Ontario Cycling Association licence or citizens permit available through the HCC or the OCA

The program will offer 2 streams at this time, Mountain biking and road.  Youth may choose to participate in just one or both of the streams.

Goals

The goals of the program will be to:

·     Increase youth membership in the club

·     Provide training and racing opportunities to youth with a focus on local events and O-cup races.

·     Provide individualized coaching to youth wanting to compete

·     Improve the technical cycling skills of youth members

·     Create a club the whole family can participate in together

·     Encourage participation and active kids

·     Foster partnerships with other clubs in our community

Organization

The youth group will have a coordinator and a head coach.  Additional support will come from our sponsored riders, our adult members and our executive as well as some special guest coaches and special partnerships.

Individualized training programs can be provided on an individual basis if requested.  Interested athletes should arrange to meet one on one with the coach.  Both short term and long term goals will be discussed and a plan developed.

Contact with the coach and or coordinator will occur at weekly events and other pre-arranged times.  The coach may attend and support our youth athletes at O-cup or provincial races that we have 5 or more youth members attending.   Expenses will be covered for the coach to attend these events.  However, transportation and registration of the athlete will be the parents responsibility.

Coaching

Coaching will be provided by Henry Dudko.  Henry Dudko is a former elite racer who has well over a decade of racing experience in both mountain bike and road racing, including many 24 hour team mountain bike efforts in the 1990's. He has gained knowledge from his training and racing over the years, and is focusing on his growth as a coach to help young riders develop in their training.  Henry is in the process of becoming a NCCP certified coach and also has his commissars training.  Henry can be contacted at 905-62 or by email at squirreltruck@hotmail.com

Additional coaching may be provided by some of our partners including:

·        Mat Reid of the Fighting Koalas

·        Guy VanKrimpkin HCC sponsored rider

·        Other coaches as necessary

The HCC is a family club and we encourage all parents to either join as well, (We offer a great bargain on a family membership) or come out to volunteer (volunteers are always needed for timing, turn arounds, support vehicles and organization) or just come out to cheer and support our youth athletes.

The team coordinator will be Denise Johnson.  Enquiries regarding the youth program can be directed to her at 905-628-9180 or by email at denise-johnson@sympatico.ca

The club will reward podium performances with a bursary for any youth member training and racing in our jersey at designated races.   The races we will focus on this year will be the Provincial Championship races and National Championship races.  The bursary’s will be handed out as follows and can be used to help defray the cost of training and racing.
